Weekend copy editor – $60/hr

Editors at Apple News highlight the best and most engaging content on our platform in a fun and fast-paced team environment. Editors on the copy and standards team work to ensure that our team’s copy is error-free, stylistically sound, and adheres to News standards.
We are looking to hire a part-time copy editor (25 hours) for a contractor position for one year, with the possibility of an extension. The hours for this role are Fridays, 4 to 7 p.m. ET, and Saturdays and Sundays, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. ET. (Please note: These hours may change slightly, but weekends will always be necessary.) Candidates located anywhere in the U.S. will be considered. The pay is $60/hour.
The right person for this role has experience copyediting for a major news organization. We’re looking for someone who has the confidence to work independently and the flexibility to work with a team. This person should have a strong grasp of journalistic ethics and standards.
Essential tasks
- Copyediting editorially curated collections within the app, notifications, and more.
- Using your journalistic experience, sound editorial judgment, and team standards to assist editors with curation decisions.
- Performing basic fact-checking.
- Surfacing bugs and other performance issues.
Minimum qualifications
- At least three years’ experience copyediting for a professional news publication.
- Strong proofreading, line-editing, and copyediting skills.
- Strong communication skills and an ability to work flexibly with the editorial team.
- Strong critical-thinking skills.
- Firm grasp of journalistic ethics and standards.
- Familiarity with a variety of style guides.
- Familiarity with a variety of content-management systems.
- Experience editing multiple pieces of content on deadline.
- An interest in hard news.
