Copy Editor, Fast Company – $36/hr
Fast Company is looking for an experienced, organized, and motivated freelance copy editor to join our Digital Copy Team. Applicants must be able to work early morning hours, 3 a.m. to 8 a.m. Eastern time, Monday through Friday. An ideal candidate will have an eye for spotting typos in headlines and inconsistencies in copy. Responsibilities include copyediting posts before they go live on the site, reading for errors in logic, spelling, and grammar. You should be efficient without sacrificing quality and be able to prioritize assignments as they come in. Experience working in CMS and knowledge of basic web formatting is recommended.
This is a fully remote part-time contract position. Pay rate: $36 per hour.
WHAT YOU’LL BE DOING
- Copyedit posts of varying lengths, from short news items to longer 3,000-word+ stories, correcting problems with word usage, sentence structure, consistency, spelling, and grammar
- Apply house style to posts
- Know when to make a judgment call on questions of style
- Communicate with editors on issues of sentence structure or fact-checking and offer constructive suggestions
- Address issues in sense and tone without losing the writer’s voice
- Review copy for our social, video, and podcast teams
- Contribute to discussions on style with the copy team and other editors
WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR
- 4 to 5+ years of copyediting experience at a magazine or website
- Experience in business media a plus but not required
- Proficient in AP style and Chicago Manual of Style
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to work independently
- Previous experience working with CMS and WordPress
- Familiarity with Airtable
- Must be able to work ET hours, Monday to Friday, 3 a.m. to 8 a.m.
