Men’s Journal is seeking a talented Weekend Editor to join our editorial team on a contract basis. This role is ideal for an experienced writer/editor with strong news judgment and the ability to handle a fast-paced breaking news environment. You’ll be responsible for overseeing content production during the weekend, jumping on breaking news stories, and assigning and guiding a small team of writers to deliver timely and engaging content to our audience.
Example schedule: You will work eight-hour shifts Friday to Sunday (e.g. 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. or 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.) with hours that may fluctuate to account for special events. You’ll staff the news desk for awards shows and holiday periods. As such, your shifts may be adjusted to accommodate such events.
The Arena Group’s expected hourly pay rate range for this position is currently $30-40 USD per hour. Actual pay may vary based on multiple factors including education, experience and other factors permitted by law. What You’ll Do:

Responding quickly to breaking news, identifying trending stories that align with Men’s Journal‘s editorial voice. Writing and editing articles as needed to ensure timely, accurate, and compelling content.

Edit all weekend articles to ensure clarity, accuracy, grammar, and adherence to the Men’s Journal style guide. Ensure that all content maintains the brand’s voice and editorial standards.

Supervise and assign a small team of weekend writers, providing editorial guidance and ensuring the quality and consistency of their work.

Collaborate with the editorial team to help plan weekend content around any major events and ensure stories are aligned with overall editorial strategy.

Work closely with other editors and the digital team to ensure smooth workflow and publication of content. Help troubleshoot and solve any issues that arise over the weekend.
What You’ll Bring:

3+ years of experience editing and writing for an entertainment or lifestyle brand with a breaking news background.

Exceptional writing and editing skills with a sharp attention to detail.

Excellent news judgement and the ability to prioritize the most relevant and compelling stories for our audience, with a solid understanding of current events, pop culture, lifestyle, health, and men’s interests.

Ability to manage and mentor a small team of writers, providing constructive feedback and ensuring deadlines are met.

Ability to work under pressure and comfortable working in a fast-paced environment, especially when breaking news develops quickly. Able to juggle multiple stories and meet tight deadlines.

Experience with social media platforms and basic knowledge of image editing tools (e.g., Photoshop) is a plus.

Familiarity with analytics tools (Google Analytics, Parsley, etc) to track content performance.
