WHY WE NEED YOU? GLAD YOU ASKED…
As the Writer you will be responsible for sourcing, writing, editing and posting digital assets – weather, news, and video – for all The Weather Network platforms. Using editorial judgment and skills as a journalist, and working closely with the Video and Editorial team and freelance editorial resources, you will generate news and video assets for audience consumption. In addition, you will be tasked with conceptualizing and delivering an active weather plan that promotes content across all platforms: web, mobile, broadcast. The role will include researching, writing and editing multiple original content items per day for both active weather and weather adjacent topics.
Please note that this is an On call position, which means there are “No Guaranteed hours” and you will be called as and when we have work requirements.
As an On-Call employee, your working hours will vary based on operational needs of the Company. Please be advised that there is no obligation for the Company to schedule you for a shift. On-Call employees are called upon to replace employees on vacation, sick days, or unplanned events.
WHAT’S THE DAY TO DAY LIKE?

- Pitch, source and verify digital content for publishing that aligns with The Weather Network’s editorial content strategy
- Write and publish original content to The Weather Network digital platforms
- Communicate with the News Assignment Editor and Met. Assignment Editor to receive assignments and coordinate publishing priorities
- Source and post content from third-party providers that fits with content strategy
- Monitor analytics and coordinate with the Optimization Lead to ensure daily objectives are being met
- Conduct interviews with sources and experts
- Geo-target news articles (namely weather content)
- Represent writing content at daily huddles, monthly writers’ meeting, and any Video and Editorial meetings as necessary
- Build, publish and maintain Storm Centre and Weather Highlights during active weather with the assistance of the Met. Assignment Editor on shift
- Publish news articles and updates to social media (Twitter and Facebook) on evenings and weekends and/or upon request from Social Media Lead
- Ability to work remotely or in the office. This arrangement may change over time based on business requirements.

WE ARE HOPING YOU HAVE:

- Excellent news judgment Ability to write headlines, choose photos/videos and package content quickly and accurately in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment Familiarity with CP Style
- Knowledge of the weather, the environment and global geography an asset
- Knowledge of Content Management Systems (ex: WordPress, Contentful, Tridion)Understanding of multiple digital formats and codecs an asset but not required
- Basic HTML and Photoshop skills and experience with online publishing tools Knowledge of JW Player an asset but not required
- Photo and video editing skills an asset
- Knowledge of SEO and Google Analytics an asset but not required
- Social media savvy
- Team player with the ability to follow direction, as well as work without supervision Excellent organizational skills, strong communication skills
- Ability to take initiative and effectively prioritize tasks Ability to work a flexible work week – weekend and night work involved
