Technical Writer/Editor – Sr. – $80,000 – $110,000 a year
The Technical Writer/Editor will collaborate with analysts, subject matter experts, and stakeholders to produce high-quality written materials that support suicide prevention outreach and program initiatives and operations. Tasks include, but are not limited to, writing and editing program materials, such as reports, regulations, articles, newsletters, press releases, and reference and guidance materials specifically in suicide prevention and mental health care for Veterans for widespread dissemination.
Position Responsibilities:
- Draft, edit, and format a wide variety of materials, including reports, outreach materials, fact sheets, newsletters, presentations, standard operating procedures, and interagency correspondence.
- Review program deliverables for grammar, clarity, accuracy, and consistency, ensuring alignment with VA style guides and plain language standards.
- Ensure compliance with Section 508 accessibility requirements for all written and electronic products.
- Edit and standardize content prepared by program staff to ensure readability and professional quality.
- Assist in the development of communication products for internal and external stakeholders.
- Translate complex or technical information into clear, concise, and user-friendly language for diverse audiences.
- Maintain templates, glossaries, and style guides to ensure consistency across program deliverables.
- Coordinate document review and approval processes, tracking edits and version control.
- Support the preparation of senior leadership briefings, talking points, and strategic messaging.
- Provide timely editing support for leadership priorities and time-sensitive communication needs.
- Help maintain program documentation and tracking databases, such as NSSP Dashboard and MIRECC SharePoint.
- Exceptional writing, editing, and proofreading skills with keen attention to detail
- Knowledge of plain language principles, federal writing standards, and behavioral health communication practices.
- Familiarity with Section 508 compliance and accessibility best practices
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and document collaboration tools
- Experience with NSSP Dashboard and MIRECC SharePoint, preferred
- Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines simultaneously
- Strong interpersonal and collaboration skills
- Interest in public health, mental health, or suicide prevention strongly preferred
- Prior experience supporting federal programs or large healthcare organizations, desired.
- Ability to obtain a public trust clearance
Education & Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree (BA/BS) in English, communications, journalism, technical writing, or a related filed
- Minimum of 8 years of professional writing and editing experience, preferably in healthcare, government, or public health environments; experience supporting suicide prevention or mental health programs a plus.
