The Need
For over 25 years, IJM has pioneered the work to protect vulnerable people from violence. 9 out of 9 times in the last decade, IJM’s Justice System Strengthening Projects have reduced slavery and violence between 50 and 85% for very large populations of people in poverty. As we grow to expand our impact to protect 500 million people from violence, we are seeking a Sr Writer, Creative & Digital.
The Sr. Writer, Creative & Digital reports to Director, Creative and Digital (North America) and will execute on translating organizational program strategies, impact, theories of change, and communications into content for North America and Global’s biggest partners and investors. By playing a critical role in building out new donor-facing deliverables, you will help catalyze a global movement that transforms communities and raises awareness of IJM’s work to bring freedom to millions, protect half a billion and make justice unstoppable.
This role is a critical part of the larger Creative and Digital Services team and acts as a liaison between IJM North America departments, including marketing and communications, fundraising, mass marketing, finance and global programs. This role will need to develop strong content that merges cases for investment with beautiful storytelling that compels a variety of audience levels to invest in IJM’s work.
The ideal candidate has the ability to write for a wide range of audiences, from technical reports to warm and authentic leadership letters and speeches.
This position requires fresh creative and analytical thinking and proven success in concepting, writing and storytelling with an understanding of investors’ needs that brings innovative solutions to strategic marketing and fundraising challenges.
This position is hybrid (onsite Tuesdays & Thursdays) if located in the Washington, DC area or remote for non-local candidates. It reports to the Director, Creative and Digital (North America) and is only available for candidates with the right to work in the US.
Responsibilities:
Strategy & Knowledge Development & Implementation:
Learn about and communicate IJM’s vision and mission, values, and strategic priorities to effectively communicate with internal and external audiences.
Become an expert in IJM’s programs, casework and field projects in order to communicate about them accurately and effectively for our high-value donors and partners.
Understand IJM’s unique value proposition and impact and have the ability to translate it for a variety of audiences.
Craft action-oriented messaging with ability to tailor content according to external audience insights.
Networking & Partnership:
Build, develop and maintain relationships with internal stakeholders and experts
Collaborate effectively with designers, writers and other creative partners – both internal and external.
Stay up-to-date on and responsive to organizational programmatic adjustments
Policies and Procedures:
Maintain written documentation on brand guidance for how we talk about IJM’s work externally
Maintain a content library and related documentation to include packaged templates and responses to various requests from within the organization
Communication:
Write and edit high-quality tailored content, create boilerplate texts and content obtained through interviewing of technical experts
Draft communications that align with IJM’s brand guidelines.
Respond promptly to day-to-day email, phone, and online communication
General tasks:
Actively manage responsible project tasks within a work management software system
Follow-up with colleagues on deliverables and coordinate further needs to complete a project or request
Qualifications:
Education & Experience:
Bachelor’s degree in communications or other
5+ years of experience in marketing, communications, journalism, creative
Demonstrated experience in content creation, proposal or grant writing, technical writing, etc.
Experienced storytelling, ideally being able to write ethically and tactfully about sensitive topics
Experience in speech writing and communication for senior leaders
Experience in Teamwork preferred
Experience within International Development sector preferred
Experience with content planning for multiple stakeholders
Exceptional ability to communicate complex information in compelling and concise manner
Portfolio of excellent work that demonstrates expertise and ability to write for/communicate with high-value donors
