Senior Business Journalist (Part-Time) – $75 an hour
Watershed Analytics, in partnership with Axios HQ, seeks a senior business journalist to write a daily Smart Brevity® news brief for our client, a Fortune 500 corporation in the transportation industry. Clear, trusted internal communications is critical now as the industry navigates potential consolidation and M&A activity. Our client relies on us to cut through the noise, build trust, and prevent rumors from filling daily information voids. Watershed’s client contact (VP of Communications) recently called their partnership with Watershed and Axios HQa“game-changer” that has “essentially_ helped us build an in-house newsroom”_ – delivering clarity and context.
Key Responsibilities
- Write daily News Briefs in Axios Smart Brevity® style, emphasizing clear “why it matters” context
- Curate and synthesize transportation industry news, focusing on railroads, trucking, ports, logistics, supply chain, and broader economic developments
- Identify the “One Big Thing” and other priority storylines that matter most to client’s diverse audiences
- Monitor real-time developments including client, peer and customer activities, stakeholder commentary, market movements, and regulatory changes
- Translate complex topics into accessible language that resonates with target audiences
- Maintain client’s corporate voice with precision, understanding the nuances required
- Collaborate to ensure consistentquality standards
Experience & Expertise:
- 7+ years of professional journalism, business writing, or corporate communications experience
- Expertise in transportation, logistics, supply chain, or related industries strongly preferred
- Proven ability to write in Axios Smart Brevity® style or similar concise, structured formats
Required Qualifications
- Writing & Communication Skills:
- Exceptional ability to distill complex information into clear, actionable insights
- Mastery of writing short, punchy sentences and effective bullet points
- Strong headline writing skills with ability to capture attention and convey key information
- Technical & Analytical Abilities:
- Ability to contextualize market movements and explain their business impact
- Understanding of how macroeconomic trends affect transportation and logistics
- Willingness to learn corporate communications best practices and internal messaging strategies

Work Environment & Schedule
- Part-time position: Approximately 15-20 hours per week
- Afternoon/Evening schedule: Content preparation for 7:00 AM ET daily distribution
- Remote work: Full flexibility with reliable internet connection required
