Managing Editor, Shopify
We’re looking for a seasoned editorial leader who can hold a high bar for quality while enabling content production at scale. Someone who builds systems to automate the tedious stuff so there’s time for what actually matters—new creative formats, better workflows, and content that genuinely helps entrepreneurs thrive.
This isn’t typical B2B content marketing. We move fast, we’re data-driven, and we’re always looking for the next lever to pull. We run like a media company with the speed and intensity of a tech startup. You need to be someone who doesn’t just tolerate that juxtaposition—you find it motivating.
What You’re Walking Into
You’re not starting from zero. We have a large, established content program—thousands of blog articles, newsletters, communities, and a team of strong editors. Your job is to take what’s already working and make it better. Find the gaps and fill them. See see new opportunities in the ever-evolving digital landscape and build toward them. Figure out how to make our content more useful and compelling as search and discovery evolve.
You’ll deal with competing priorities, unexpected requests, and new problems constantly. But you’ll also have real autonomy, a talented team, and the resources to actually build things.
What You’ll Do
Run the editorial operation: Own the content lifecycle across our blog, newsletters, and other surfaces. Manage day-to-day output while building the systems that make everything run smoother.
Build systems that scale: Find what’s repetitive or broken and fix it. Build editorial judgement frameworks, quality standards, and AI-powered workflows that let us do more without sacrificing quality. Automate the toilsome so you can focus on what matters.
Be the quality bar: You’re the final check on what ships. You have strong editorial judgment and can clearly explain why something works or doesn’t. Occasionally this means editing important pieces yourself. Other times it means setting standards that guide hundreds of decisions—and building systems that govern them at scale.
Manage the team: Lead a team of senior editors remotely. Run meetings, set priorities, give clear feedback, and help people do their best work. You’re hands-on when needed and motivated to develop others’ growth.
Manage agencies: Handle relationships with external partners producing high-volume content. Build contracts, manage budgets, and ensure they deliver work that meets your standards.
Navigate cross-functional work: You’ll be partnering with teams from across Shopify—SEO, product, leadership, brand, and more. You need to balance their priorities against yours, make tradeoffs, and communicate decisions clearly. Sometimes you need to say no, and you know how to do it with grace and clarity.
Find what’s next: Look for new formats, surfaces, or ways to use our existing content. You have creative ideas and the operational skills to make them happen.
You’re a Good Fit If…
You have strong editorial instincts: You’ve worked in media and know what great content looks like. You can generate ideas quickly, you stay current on what’s happening in content and commerce, and you have good taste. You understand what resonates with audiences.
You’ve managed complex editorial operations: You’ve led teams and freelance networks. You’ve juggled competing priorities and kept quality high under pressure. You’ve worked across different content formats and understand how strategy changes by channel.
You’re a systems thinker: You see patterns and build processes. You’ve created workflows that scale and standards that stick. You’re comfortable both editing individual pieces and building systems that improve thousands of them.
You’ve managed budgets and vendors: You’ve built SOWs, negotiated with agencies, managed budgets, and handled capacity planning. You know how to get good work from external partners.
You’re technically comfortable—and curious: You understand SEO and how search is evolving. You’ve used AI tools to solve problems. You can read analytics and use data to make decisions. And when you don’t know something, you have no problem raising a hand to unblock yourself.
You’ve worked in fast environments: You’ve ideally worked at a SaaS company, B2B brand, or startup alongside your media experience. You understand tech company pace.
Nice to Have
- Agency experience
- Experience with UGC programs or online communities
- Background with ecommerce or as a Shopify merchant
What This Actually Looks Like
This role is challenging. You’ll build new systems while managing high output. You’ll balance strategic thinking with hands-on work. You’ll bridge creative teams and business teams, internal and external partners, quality and speed.
Some days are back-to-back meetings managing stakeholder requests. Other days you’re deep in editing or building workflows. You’ll context-switch a lot and need to maintain your standards under pressure.
If you need clear processes and a predictable routine, this probably isn’t right. But if you like creative and operational challenges, and you want to shape content that millions of entrepreneurs use, this could be a great fit.
