Reports to: Managing Editor
Topix Media Lab is seeking a Junior Copy Editor & Fact Checker to join our editorial and production teams. The ideal candidate is early in their publishing career—either fresh out of college or with a few years of experience—and eager to grow within a fast-paced, creative environment.
This role is perfect for someone who takes pride in precision, loves language and is interested in working across a wide variety of book and magazine projects. You’ll collaborate closely with the Managing Editor and the broader editorial team to ensure our publications meet the highest standards of accuracy, clarity and voice.
The Role:
- Copy edit and proofread text across multiple titles for grammar, punctuation, flow, clarity, consistency and adherence to AP style and our house style
- Fact check all editorial content to ensure accuracy and consistency in tone and presentation. This includes checking the answer keys of puzzle magazines and books
- Take ownership of the house style guide, adding new entries as needed
- Maintain clear communication with the Managing Editor about project deadlines, priorities and potential issues
- Balance multiple deadlines across overlapping projects while maintaining accuracy and attention to detail
- Assist editors with a variety of editorial tasks, including writing short pieces of copy, contributing to brainstorms and supporting the development of ongoing projects
Required Qualifications:
- Intimate knowledge and strong command of AP style and English grammar
- Ability to multitask and meet tight deadlines
- Meticulous attention to detail and commitment to editorial accuracy
- Strong editorial instinct
- Research chops beyond checking the first page of Google search results
- Self-motivated, organized and comfortable working both independently and as part of a team
- Familiarity with Google Docs
- Education: Bachelor’s degree required
Preferred Qualifications:
- Familiarity with Adobe Acrobat, Adobe InDesign and Asana
- Experience with the magazine and/or book production process
- Interest in pop culture (e.g., Harry Potter, Dungeons & Dragons), cookbooks, self-help, children’s media and puzzle magazines
