Image Description Writer (Photo Captioning Project) – $15/hr – $30/hr
TasteMakers is a curated community of creatives, writers, and makers with genuine taste — people who care about doing excellent work in the age of AI. We partner with leading tech companies and AI labs on hands-on projects, and bring in members of our community on contract to do the work. Together, our contributors are helping shape how the next generation of AI systems sees, reads, and understands the world.
The role
We’re looking for detail-oriented people with a good eye and strong written English to write clear, thorough descriptions of photographs for a research project with a leading AI company. Design students and digital natives tend to love this work — but you don’t need a degree or a design background to do it well.
The job is simple: look closely at a photo and describe what you see in plain, well-written English — the main objects, colors, setting, any people, visible text, and the overall feel of the image. The goal is a description clear enough that someone could picture the photo without seeing it.
It’s a lot like describing a scene to a friend — we’re just doing it carefully and consistently.
This is straightforward, flexible remote work at the intersection of AI, design, and language.
What you’ll do
- Look closely at each photo and write one clear, accurate description
- Cover the key details: main objects, colors, setting, people, any visible text, and the general mood or style
- Follow a simple style guide so descriptions stay consistent across the team
- Keep a steady pace while keeping quality high
- Flag anything unclear or unusual along the way
Who you are
- Strong written English — clear and easy to read. This is the most important thing.
- An exceptional eye for detail — you notice things other people skip past
- Patient and consistent — happy doing focused work at a steady pace
- Reliable and responsive — you can commit to a regular weekly schedule
- Comfortable following guidelines and taking on feedback
You do not need a degree, a portfolio, or prior design experience. Design students and digital natives tend to be a great fit.
A note on AI use
This is human-written work. The use of AI tools is strictly forbidden — no ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Grammarly, or AI rewriting/paraphrasing tools — at any step. We want your own words. Submissions are checked for AI-generated text, and AI use means removal from the project and forfeited pay for the affected work. AI writing is everywhere these days, so we get that this is a big ask — but for this project, genuinely human descriptions are the whole point.
Compensation & details
- Pay: $15–30 USD/hour, based on experience and a short skills check
- Hours: Flexible, remote — roughly 20–40 hours per week (days, nights, and weekends all fine)
- Location: Remote — work from anywhere
- Start: Immediately — applications reviewed on a rolling basis
- Duration: Project-based, with potential to extend
- Volume: A high-volume project — we’re bringing on a sizable team
