The Observer Is Looking for Music Writers
When you’re a freelancer, a call for pitches from editors looking for new writers is your golden opportunity to showcase your voice and the brilliant story ideas you have pogo-ing in your mind.
Since taking the helm as the music editor, one of my goals has been to spotlight more niche scenes and local talent. Dallas musicians are constantly keeping music fans entertained with their new releases and shows, and we want to continue spreading the word.
This is where you come in. I’m looking to expand our current roster of contributors, bringing in more perspectives to cover the Dallas music scene. Are you good at identifying and reporting news stories? Are you the friend who won’t shut up about a new band or artist? Is your taste in music almost comically diverse? Are you as into music as the rules of grammar and punctuation? And, most important, are you a non-ghosting, reliable, aspiring or professional freelance writer who works best under a deadline?
Well, we might be a match.
We’re looking for freelance contributors to join our music section. We’re specifically looking for people who are aficionados of metal, country, hip-hop, EDM and K-pop to dive deeper into these genres and highlight how they’re reflected in Dallas.
The perks of writing for the Observer include endless constructive criticism in the form of internet comments, (some) money, concert and event tickets and an excellent way to impress your parents. Most of all, you get paid to talk with artists and write about things not on the beaten path.
Send an introductory email with three links or PDF copies of writing samples to me. My email is in my bio below. Throwing in some story pitches with a potential headline about North Texas music will give us a good idea of what you want to do and what you think the Observer should do. Be specific about the interviews, concert reviews, the nuggets you want to unpack and any cool angles on albums/new music. It can be timely or timeless as long as it’s interesting. It could be the beginning of a beautiful friendship.
