Temporary Editor, Humanities
The Temporary Editor, Humanities is an entry-level position within Editorial at Six Red Marbles. The editor is subject-matter expert responsible for developing accurate, subject-specific content for SRM and its clients. This position works closely with senior editorial staff helping to review and edit content for clarity, conciseness, voice, and accuracy. The Editor may also function as a content lead on small projects.
Primary Responsibilities/Expectations:
Editing/Content Development Skills
With guidance and support from senior staff:
- apply understanding of Humanities, primarily Social Studies, curriculum area to decide what concepts and difficulty levels are appropriate for material at different grade level.
- produce clearly worded, logically organized, creative content that is easy for learners to understand and on target in terms of client expectations.
- produce content that aligns with approach, tone, and format of the program/project.
- apply practical knowledge of what works in the classroom and what teachers expect from a good lesson, item, or activity.
Editing/Content Refinement Skills
With guidance and support from senior staff:
- ensure that content from outside vendors/freelancers is accurate and contains clear, engaging, and pedagogically sound instruction.
- consistent voice and client style, vision, and philosophy are carried out.
- lessons align with client guidelines, including those for word and page counts.
- identify and correct grammatical and stylistic errors.
- verify the accuracy of content, both print and digital.
- review manuscripts and proofs to ensure alignment and consistency across grade levels.
- implement feedback.
Knowledge of Educational Marketplace
With guidance and support from senior staff:
- develop an understanding of what is and is not acceptable content based on bias and sensitivity concerns in various markets.
- display an understanding of state, national and international standards, as appropriate.
- increase awareness of trends, expectations, and standards of specific client marketplaces.
Leadership and Communication Skills
- Promptly answer queries from team members.
- Adapt flexibly to changes in roles and needs on projects.
- Follow editorial workflows.
- Work with the Director and senior staff to prioritize workload and review work and growth in editorial skills.
- Identify issues or risks to the project and raise concerns.
- Monitor time on task to ensure it keeps pace with the project’s production schedule.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Bachelor’s degree in English, Social Studies or related field required; Master’s degree in English, Social Studies or education a plus
- Minimum 3 years teaching experience in Social Studies or History or general editorial experience
- Experience with MS Office products; experience with Adobe Acrobat a plus
- Adept at following guidelines and instructions; familiarity with Chicago Manual of Style a plus
- Familiarity with the NGSS/Common Core and other standards; familiarity with Common Core State Standards/NGSS a plus
- Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills
- Meticulous approach to work and an eye for detail
- Must thrive in a fast-paced environment and meet deadlines while maintaining quality
- Ability to follow explicit instructions consistently but also to exercise good judgement when making work-related decisions
- Strong interpersonal communication skills
- Ability to quickly learn and master new technologies and processes

- Ability to collaborate effectively with peers
- Proficient in a Microsoft Environment (Word, Excel); experience with Adobe Acrobat a plus
