Status Coup News
Remote (East Coast Hours)
$60,000-$70,000 w/ health insurance
Status Coup, the leading independent news outlet reporting ON-THE-GROUND across America on news and political stories largely ignored or minimized by mainstream media, is looking for a full-time producer to help us create, develop, polish, and package our pro-working class, anti-corruption reporting and commentary. Our full-time producer is expected to be a jack-of-all-trades who can produce, edit, and identify the key, and potentially viral, sound bites and moments from our on-the-ground interviews and reporting. The producer will also work in the areas of social media, video publishing, guest booking, on-the-ground reporting logistics, and more. This is NOT your typical mainstream media job—our tag line is “covering what the corporate media covers up.” We’re looking for a passionate individual who think outside-the-box and outside the corporate-media-echo-chamber.
Roles and responsibilities of our producer will include:
- Combing through raw video footage from our on-the-ground interviews, protest coverage, and more to produce and edit compelling videos that leverage visuals, soundbites, graphics, and other elements to tell the story and keep viewers engaged. This requires having a strong eye and instincts to identify if there is news to break within our footage, identifying what the main story and headline is, what are the key sound bites and moments to build the video around, and structuring video in a way that flows.
- Combing through our on-the-ground reporting livestreams—which can range from 1-3 hours—and producing and editing compelling recap and montages (typically 10-15 minutes). As stated above, this requires being able to identify whether our footage contains news to break, what the main story and headline is, etc.
- Combing through our videos and longer-form content to produce and edit down to short-form 1-2 minute videos for social media platforms—in the structure that works for those platforms and can potentially go viral. This includes adding captions, overlays, and music where appropriate—and coming up with ideas for other compelling visual elements to add.
- Crafting and posting social media posts on X, FB, TikTok, IG, BlueSky, etc (including while reporters are live on-the-ground).
- Working with our reporters, produce their recorded videos on a range of news & political topics. This includes adding sound bites, graphics, full-screen quotes, & more.
- Working with our reporters, produce their in-studio livestreams by organizing segment topics with complementary elements including articles, broll, sound bites, graphics, & more.
- Scouting for on-the-ground reporting trips: identifying and pitching potential stories and reporting trips our reporters can go on; identifying and booking potential guests; identifying action and events to cover (protests, town halls, community meetings, etc); and helping organize a schedule for reporters.
- Coming up with catchy headlines for our YouTube videos, writing descriptions, and when needed, creating compelling visual thumbnails for those videos as well as Substack articles.
- Producing and editing promotional videos for Status Coup and promo videos for our on-the-ground reporting trips.
- Creating and producing original and unique video content and series in the form of media criticism, exposing political corruption and hypocrisy, and our current new economic Gilded Age. Examples include our previous BREAKing News video series, “This is Your Brain on Corporate Media,” and “Economic Hunger Games.”
- Pitching media outlets—TV news, podcasts, independent media—on covering developments/news from our on-the-ground reporting trips and/or having our reporters on as guests.
- Pitching TV news outlets to license our on-the-ground reporting footage (when we have newsworthy footage outlets may be interested in).
***Although not a key part of the job, there will be opportunities to do on-camera hosting and videos (although not required)***
Required Skills:
- 2+ years of video production experience preferably in the news industry
