News Editor
We are currently recruiting a News Editor for our client, a bipartisan media organization that provides coverage from a range of perspectives, with an editorial voice that often leans toward traditional values and limited-government viewpoints. The outlet is committed to thoughtful, independent journalism that engages audiences across the political spectrum.
About The Position
This is a full-time direct hire position
Location: Remote
The client is seeking an experienced editor with strong journalism and fact-checking skills to join our growing news department. As a news editor working with a team of writers from all around the world, you’ll be responsible for editing content across news beats, according to the needs of the news cycle. You can work independently and under time pressure to produce factually accurate and clean copy, with your strong ability to identify and eliminate errors. You can also identify ways to improve headlines, leads, and story structure under tight time constraints. The ideal candidate for this position will be grounded in journalism ethics, with a dedication to presenting the facts without partisanship or influence from special interests, regardless of personal bias or convictions. Giving and receiving constructive feedback is an integral part of the role.
Key Responsibilities
- Edit and review news content for accuracy, clarity, completeness, objectivity, grammar, spelling, organization, readability, and style.
- Write clear and informative headlines.
- Coordinate with reporters and editors to ensure consistency in style, tone, and quality.
- Ensure all content complies with company policies and guidelines, including ethics, accuracy, and style.
Required Qualifications
- Availability to work 4-5 weekdays from 2 p.m. to 11 p.m. ET, plus occasional weekend shift (2 p.m. to 11 p.m. ET)
- A bachelor’s degree in journalism is preferred
- 5+ years of experience in a newsroom or editorial environment
- Strong knowledge of AP style
- Excellent fact-checking skills, strong editing skills, good communication with reporters
- Strong self-motivational and time-management skills
- Ability to work well under pressure and meet tight deadlines in a fast-paced news environment
Salary Range: $65k – $80k, negotiable depending on experience
