Medical Proofreader – $75 an hour
The Proofreader ensures the textual accuracy, consistency, and clarity of scholarly-level military medical and historical manuscripts, adhering to the American Medical Association (AMA) Style Guide. Working closely with editorial and production teams, the Proofreader helps maintain professional standards that uphold the organization’s reputation for publishing authoritative medical and historical texts.
Key Responsibilities and Position Context
- Serve as the final quality checkpoint for grammar, style, and consistency for scholarly-level textbooks and publications.
- Ensure that manuscripts meet high editorial standards aligned with the AMA Style Guide.
- Collaborate with editors and subject matter experts to correct and refine content.

By meticulously reviewing texts for accuracy and compliance with specified guidelines, the Proofreader directly contributes to the timely publication of critical medical and historical resources, supporting the organization’s mission to disseminate reliable, authoritative information.
3. Duties & Responsibilities
Core Responsibilities
- Review and correct grammar, spelling, punctuation, and format in line with the American Medical Association (AMA) Style Guide (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AMA_Manual_of_Style).
- Verify the usage of medical and historical terminology against a comprehensive medical dictionary or style references.
- Maintain accuracy levels of at least 98% across all assigned projects.
- Mark corrections in PDF or other proofing platforms, ensuring changes are clearly communicated to editors and authors.
- Track and document common error trends, providing feedback to enhance editorial processes.
Secondary Responsibilities
- Collaborate with in-house or external editors to resolve complex style or terminology queries.
- Occasionally participate in production meetings or progress check-ins for large projects.
- Support continuous improvement by sharing insights on style and proofing best practices.
Reporting Structure
- Reports directly to the Senior Production Editor.
- Does not supervise other staff.
4. Mandatory Qualifications
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in English or a related subject from an accredited college.
Professional Experience
- Minimum two (2) years of experience in the USA proofreading scholarly medical books, medical monographs, or book-length medical publications (100+ pages), for which you were an editor or proofreader, but not one of the authors.
- Not looking for those who have only proofread scientific journal articles or scientific papers.
Skills and Competencies
- MANDATORY: Must be able to either give three (3) samples, or list three (3) publications, of medical works that they had completed editorial (proofreading) support
- Any book on listed on Amazon.com or on a specialized medical/scientific publisher website, whether currently in-print or not, will be fine.
- No copy of the text of the book is required, however, must provide some evidence that you were the editor, copyeditor, or proofreader, if not listed in the book on the website.
- Demonstrated expertise with the current AMA Style Guide (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AMA_Manual_of_Style) and comprehensive medical terminology.
- Ability to ensure a 98% or higher accuracy rate in proofreading tasks.
- Native-level American English (not British English).
Software/Tool Proficiency
- Proficiency in PDF annotation and standard proofreading tools.
5. Preferred/Optional Qualifications
- Experience with military or historical texts.
- Familiarity with track changes in Microsoft Word or similar editorial software.
- Additional certifications in editing or proofreading.
6. Work Environment and Conditions
- 100% remote position.
- Employee-set flexible work schedule.
- No travel is required for this position.
