Freelance copyeditor – American Chemical Society
Chemical & Engineering News (C&EN) is seeking a freelance copyeditor. C&EN produces independent journalism from around the world of chemistry. It is published by the American Chemical Society, the world’s largest scientific society dedicated to a single discipline. The ideal candidate should be available for at least 5 hours of work per week and should be able to accommodate assignments that may come in as early as 6:00 a.m. eastern US time zone. While exact hours of work can vary, flexibility during peak international coverage times is important.
What you’ll do:
-Copyedit chemistry-related features and news stories, as well as graphics that accompany stories, for both print and online platforms. Other editing may include podcast scripts, email campaigns, content marketing material, video scripts, reports, and on-screen text for videos.
-Edit for grammar, US English spelling, C&EN style, clarity, consistency, readability, inclusive language, and accessibility. Do basic fact-checking, and have a basic understanding of best practices for editing online content.
-Communicate clearly to C&EN writers, story editors, production editors, and the senior copyeditor—both in comments on a story and in messages about scheduling.
-Edit in a range of applications, including a content management system, Google Docs, and Microsoft Word.
What you’ll bring:
-At least 5 years of copyediting experience
-A strong grasp of grammar and usage
-Experience following a style guide
-Experience communicating edits and schedules to writers
-Preferred: Experience with inclusive language, news editing, science editing, graphics editing, and editing for digital platforms, as well as comfort with technology
