What You’ll Do:
The Copyeditor/Proofreader performs editorial and item bank work (copyediting, proofreading, and application of style conventions) on paper/pencil and online products from inception through delivery. The Copyeditor/Proofreader has strong editorial skills, is dedicated to accuracy, possesses strong communication skills, and has a high degree of personal accountability. The Copyeditor/Proofreader must show a willingness to adapt to changing processes and procedures that improve efficiency. The Copyeditor/Proofreader must complete assigned work on schedule and in line with style, quality, and accuracy expectations, using the Agile/Scrum workflow methodology.
Responsibilities:
- Editorial (Copyediting and Proofreading)
- Reviews and ensures that program Style Guide requirements have been applied to all materials produced, including passages, items, test forms, header sheets, answer documents, ancillary materials, manuals, and accommodated materials.
- Reviews all program materials, including item content and artwork, for format, sense, and style, grammar, spelling, and punctuation.
- Make edits and apply style to items in an item bank.
- Review and associate art with the appropriate items in an item bank.
- Performs read-aloud in partnership with another Editorial team member or with the use of AI tools.
- Performs cold reads and checks content against a source of truth, such as a previous version, a prior year’s materials, or item bank.
- Use checklists to ensure that content meets requirements for each production stage and that process has been followed.
- Ensure that no content has been changed other than that marked for revision.
- Check online display of forms and completes change logs.
- Meet deadlines for assigned projects.
- Familiar with using software: Beyond Compare, Adobe PDF mark-up tools, Microsoft Office products, JIRA, Smartsheet, and item bank systems.
- Complete assignments utilizing the Agile/Scrum workflow methodology.
What You’ll Need:
- Bachelor’s degree + minimum 0-2 years relevant work experience.
- Prior editorial work experience.
- Strong attention to detail.
- Excellent planning and organizational skills.
- Ability to balance multiple projects and to flex when priorities or schedules change.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to implement and assimilate new processes in an environment of continuous improvement.
- Effective interpersonal skills, team-oriented approach, and ability to collaborate.
- Demonstrated ability to solve problems and think critically.
- Solid PC skills including Microsoft Office Word, Excel, and SharePoint, plus Adobe Acrobat (PDF Comments specifically).
- Knowledge of a style manual, such as The Chicago Manual of Style.
- Must be a U.S. citizen or not require visa sponsorship now or in the future.
Preferred Skills:
- Prior experience and/or professional knowledge of the education industry.
- Knowledge of electronic prepress processes.
- Knowledge of printing processes and printing terminology.
- Familiarity with Agile/Scrum workflow.
