Copy Editor, Vox.com – $65,000 – $70,000 a year

The copy editor will be responsible for copy editing and fact-checking Vox content (text, videos, graphics, social copy, and other materials as needed) to ensure it meets our high editorial standards of clarity, accuracy, inclusivity, and sensitivity, as well as being free of typos and grammatical errors and adhering to Vox style. This editor will also weigh in on critical decisions about our content to ensure the work we publish reflects our goals of quality and ambition. They will work across the network to ensure that our work finds a wide audience through engagement strategy, strong headlines, and homepage placement.
We expect them to have at least four years of copy editing experience, preferably at a digital-first news organization. This is a full-time role that can be remote.
WHAT YOU’LL DO
- Copy edit Vox content for grammar, spelling, punctuation, house style, and editorial standards of clarity, sensitivity, and fairness.
- Thoroughly fact-check certain stories, assessing all claims, data, quotes, statistics, and sources to ensure they are correct and supported by reliable evidence.
- Use discretion and independent judgment to determine whether articles meet our standard for publication and flag potential issues to senior team members.
- Read, evaluate, and edit all unpublished works using the following criteria:

- Clarity and accuracy
- Adherence to best practices with regard to sensitivity and inclusivity, legal liability, and inflammatory language
- Proper Vox style, spelling, and grammar
- Assist senior team members in setting publishing standards:

- Identify stylistic issues or inconsistencies and discuss with the team to determine a solution
- Assist with fact-checking, crafting display copy, image choice, and other duties
- Learn Vox style inside and out and serve as an expert adviser for staff, including answering questions in the Style and Standards channel
WHO YOU ARE
- 4+ years’ experience in copy editing, preferably for a digital-first news organization
- Experience in fact-checking news stories
- An eagle eye for mistakes in grammar, spelling, and punctuation
- A commitment to the highest journalistic standards of accuracy, clarity, and sensitivity/inclusivity
- The ability to work quickly and collaboratively under tight deadlines amid a busy news environment
- Familiarity with AP style a plus
