Copy Editor – Contractor at The American Flood Coalition – $40-50 per hour
The American Flood Coalition (AFC) is a nonpartisan group that drives transformational adaptation to higher seas, stronger storms, and more frequent flooding. AFC comprises more than 450 elected officials, local leaders, military groups, and businesses that work together to advance resilient and equitable flood solutions at the local, state, and federal level. As the only organization that focuses on flooding and sea level rise across all levels of government, AFC is uniquely positioned to transform how communities around the country adapt to flooding and sea level rise.
The Marketing and Communications team is responsible for all external communications and positioning for AFC. This contractor will work with the Marketing and Communications team to copyedit written content to broaden organizational reach, membership, and key priorities. Due to the nature of the work, turnaround times are sometimes expected within 24-48 hours.
Scope of work:
We are seeking a freelance copyediting and writing expert with a firm grasp of AP style to ensure all external communications adhere to the AFC tone of voice and branding guidelines. The work will include copyediting and writing to translate complex issues and ideas into tangible, actionable products. The ideal candidate has experience copyediting multiple types of external content at various stages. This is a short-term contract with the opportunity to expand the scope to a longer-term retainer. During the initial contract period of the first three months we anticipate 20 hours per month for up to five deliverables of varying lengths per month. Deliverables will include copyediting one-pagers, opinion pieces, newsletters, and reports.
Timeline: This is an initial contract with the opportunity to extend to a longer-term retainer. The initial contract period will run from April 21 – July 21, 2025.
Rate: $40-50 per hour
The right person has:
- Experience copyediting external communications content at all stages of production and in a variety of formats (research reports, email newsletters, blog posts, etc).
- Experience working with multiple reviewers and writers.
- Keen eye for grammar and tone of voice.
- Strong time management and organizational skills to be able to turn around finished products on short notice, often within 24 hours.
- Experience translating scientific or technical content into clear, concise, and actionable communications products.
- A strong grasp of AP style.
