Freelance Food Writer – Chowhound – $21–$25/hr
Chowhound is a site for food aficionados – everyone who wants to know the absolute best way to prepare a dish and the science behind why that’s so. We dig deep into the history of food and how it works, and care just as much about the best time of year to buy oysters as we do the reason American cheese has such a perfect melt (and whether or not it’s actually cheese).
We’re looking for talented freelance writers to join our food news and features teams. If you are a serious home cook, a chef (currently or in a previous life), or just love researching the what and why something operates the way it does, Chowhound is the place for you.
Two Ways to Contribute
We’re hiring for two freelance paths. You’re welcome to choose the opportunity that best matches your experience and availability, or indicate interest in both when you apply.
News Writer ($21–$25/hr): Cover short-form news and evergreen content (300–900 words). Writers work a consistent schedule of their choosing (10–40 hours/week). Compensation within this range is based on experience and qualifications, with $21 per hour as the starting rate.
Feature Writer ($0.08-$0.10/word): Focus on deep-dive, long-form features (2,600+ words). There is no set schedule, but we ask for a minimum of one feature per week. Compensation within this range is based on experience and qualifications, with 8 cents per word as the starting rate.
