Senior Scriptwriter for Driver61 (Hybrid/Remote) – $46,000-$73,000 Per Year
Our Driver61 YouTube channel has 1.4M subscribers and a reputation for being the most trusted source of F1 technical content on YouTube. This year alone we’ve made content with Ferrari, Racing Bulls, Brembo, Formula E and many more.
Now we’re evolving, telling bigger stories, doing original research, and finding narratives that go beyond what’s already online.
We’re hiring a Senior Writer/Director to own the channel’s editorial output.
You’ll take topics from concept to a production-ready script – finding sources, structuring the narrative, and writing in a voice that 1.4M people trust.
You’ll have real creative ownership and access to an established network of F1 engineers and insiders.
“Writer/Director” because you’ll shape both the words and the visuals – by writing scripts that tell our video editors exactly what viewers should see.
The ambition: Netflix-quality content about F1 and motorsport. Better storytelling, deeper research, bigger narratives. That’s where we’re going – and we need a writer who can get us there.
What You’ll Be Doing
Your Core Responsibility:
Write ~40 videos per year for the Driver61 YouTube channel, from research through to production-ready script.
The Workflow:
- Research & Story Development – You’ll work with Scott to decide on a topic, then find the angle. That means tracking down sources, conducting interviews, finding filming locations and digging for information that isn’t already online. Your job is to find the story within the topic.
- Scriptwriting – Write scripts of ~2,500-5,000 words that are structured for YouTube: strong hooks, clear narrative arc, moments of surprise and insight. You’ll also write visual notes so editors know what you’re seeing.
- Review & Revision – Work with Scott to refine scripts, then support editors through production with clarifications on visual direction.
Occasionally:
- Travel to F1 teams and motorsport manufacturers to support filming
- Review analytics to understand what’s working
- Pitch original video ideas (not required, but welcomed)
Location
Preferred: Based near Stratford-upon-Avon, working from the office 1-3 days per week. This is a collaborative role; being in the room speeds up feedback and improves the work.
Also workable: UK-based but further afield, visiting the office a couple of times per month.
Remote (UK): We’d consider a fully remote role for a candidate with a proven track record of writing for major YouTube channels, but this is the exception, not the norm.
International: Only for genuinely exceptional candidates-someone with credits on a top-tier channel (think Veritasium-level) who also has deep F1 knowledge. If that’s you, reach out.
Travel: Occasional trips to F1 team visits (travel and accommodation covered, usually 1-3 days per visit).
Salary & Benefits
Salary: £35,000-£55,000
The range is wide because we’re open to two paths: a strong writer with the raw talent and curiosity we can develop, or a proven YouTube scriptwriter with credits on major channels. We’ll pay accordingly.
Benefits:
- Pension (standard employer contribution)
- 28 days holiday, including bank holidays
- Laptop provided
- Performance bonus tied to channel growth
- Travel covered for F1 team visits
The intangibles:
- Creative ownership over content seen by millions
- Small team (6 people) = real impact, not bureaucracy
Employment Type: Full-time employee (not contractor)
What We’re Looking For
Must Have:
- Storytelling ability – You know how to structure a narrative for YouTube that holds attention for 20+ minutes. Hooks, tension, payoff.
- Strong writing – Clear, engaging, with a distinctive voice. You’ve written long-form content before-journalism, YouTube scripts, or similar.
- Research and source-finding – You know how to dig for information that isn’t already online. You can pick up the phone, find the right people, and get them to talk.
- Technical aptitude – You can grasp complex concepts and explain them clearly. You don’t need an engineering degree, but you need to be the kind of person who could understand how a J-damper works if you spent an afternoon on it.
Nice to Have:
- Professional experience writing for YouTube (especially channels with 500K+ subscribers)
- Motorsport background
- Existing knowledge of F1 technical regulations, history, and engineering
Personality Fit:
Curious. Detail-oriented. Self-motivated. Comfortable working independently but collaborative when it counts.
This role probably isn’t for you if:
- You’re a generalist content writer looking for any writing job
- You wait to be told what to do rather than figuring it out
- You’ve never been obsessed with understanding how something works
- You’re not a fan of F1
