Job Summary: As the Freelance Entertainment News Writer you will focus on creating captivating stories about Africa’s vibrant entertainment industry, including music, film, fashion, television, and arts. Your responsibilities will include researching and writing timely articles, features, and interviews that spotlight influential personalities, emerging talents, and industry trends. You will monitor entertainment news and events across Africa and the diaspora, covering awards, concerts, festivals, and cultural milestones. Collaborating with editors and content creators, you will ensure your work is engaging, accurate, and culturally relevant. Additionally, you will adapt content for digital platforms and social media, using a dynamic storytelling style to capture the pulse of African entertainment and engage a global audience.
Key Responsibilities:
- Research and Writing:
- Conduct thorough research on current events, trends, and stories related to Afrobeat music, African celebrities, and the entertainment industry.
- Write clear, concise, and engaging news articles, features, and interviews.
- Ensure all content is accurate, well-sourced, and aligns with the station’s voice and editorial standards.
- Content Creation:
- Develop a consistent flow of entertainment news articles to be published on the station’s website and social media platforms.
- Create eye-catching headlines and engaging content that attracts and retains readers.
- Pitch story ideas and collaborate with the content team to develop compelling features and special reports.
- Editing and Proofreading:
- Edit and proofread articles for grammar, style, and accuracy.
- Ensure all content meets the station’s quality standards and is free from errors.
- Revise articles based on feedback from the Content Manager and other team members.
- Audience Engagement:
- Monitor audience feedback and engagement metrics to understand reader preferences and improve content.
- Stay updated on social media trends and integrate relevant content into articles.
- Respond to reader comments and questions in a professional and engaging manner.
- Collaboration:
- Work closely with the Content Manager and other writers to align content with the station’s goals and initiatives.
- Participate in virtual team meetings and contribute ideas for content strategy and development.
- Assist with other writing and content creation tasks as needed.
- Proven experience as a news writer, journalist, or similar role, with a focus on entertainment or music journalism.
- Strong knowledge of Afrobeat music, African celebrities, and the broader entertainment industry.
- Excellent writing, editing, and proofreading skills.
- Ability to produce high-quality content on tight deadlines.
- Proficiency in using content management systems and social media platforms.
- Strong research and analytical skills.
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple assignments simultaneously.
- A degree in Journalism, Communications, or a related field is preferred but not required.
