Advocacy and State Content Writer
Location: Remote
Contract Dates: Through 2025, with the possibility of an extension
Hours: Anticipated 40 hours per week

AARP is seeking a skilled and experienced Advocacy and State Content Writer to join our team. In this role, you will play a vital part in communicating AARP’s advocacy efforts, highlighting key wins, and keeping readers informed about important legislative developments at both the state and federal levels. Your ability to translate complex political issues into clear, engaging content will be crucial as you work alongside our Government Affairs, Campaigns, and other teams to deliver timely, impactful stories.
Key Responsibilities:
- Report, write and update content focused on AARP advocacy efforts and wins on a state and national level.
- Summarize complex legislative developments at a state and federal level and their impact into compelling, accessible prose for readers.
- Collaborate and connect with Government Affairs, AARP issue area and Campaigns teams and other parts of the organization to find news and content.
- Annotate stories thoroughly so researchers can check the facts with minimal additional digging and upload transcripts of interviews.
- Learn how to use our Brightspot content management system and to format and produce stories, as well as our CPS/AEM content production system.
- Produce and update state-focused guides on elections, taxes, and other priority topics.
- Stay informed of relevant news and adjust content quickly to maintain accuracy and relevance.
- Partner with designers to conceptualize and develop visuals for guides and podcast-related content.
- Develop SEO-optimized headlines and manage production timelines effectively.
- Collaborate with internal teams to ensure alignment across projects and goals.
Ideal Candidate:
- 5 years of Journalism experience
- Experience covering federal legislation
- Collaborative – willing to work with teams throughout the organization
- Ability to learn the production process/technical skills
