Publications Director & Managing Editor – $60,000 – $70,000 a year
Edit and produce bimonthly print and digital editions of Journal of Financial Service Professionals; develop and oversee annual production deadlines and budgets; collaborate with editor and stakeholders to develop and implement initiatives to increase submissions, broaden editorial scope, and strengthen impact of Journal; collaborate with creative director to ensure the publication reflects the creative vision and approved styles; investigate ways to improve efficiencies and cost optimization while ensuring continued quality of Professional Development publications portfolio
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Editorial—ensure editorial practices and highest quality standards are maintained in accordance with approved style guides; serve as liaison with editor’s office and with authors; copyedit and proof all Journal content; oversee Professional Development team in proofing processes
- Production—prepare and maintain annual production calendar; ensure on-time and on-budget delivery of print and digital editions (DE); serve as primary contact with printer and DE vendor; in close coordination with creative director, oversee the layout and prepare pagination of issues; provide final issue check using InSite online proofing platform; track DE user metrics using proprietary Thermostats portal
- Marketing—collaborate with Marketing and Communications to enhance exposure of Journal, including writing promotional copy for use with Journal Highlight email, social media posts, and Journal Live! programs; promote Journal and FSP publications to wider NAIFA and industry audience
- Fulfillment/Distribution/Postal Issues—prepare annual Statement of Ownership; serve as liaison with EBSCO (subscription bulk orders and claims; quarterly royalty payments; annual rates requests); handle requests for eprints/reprints; periodically review list of Journal comp subscriptions; work with printer’s postal affairs manager for postal system updates
- Retirement Plans and Retirement Planning e-book—responsible for all editorial and production, including efforts of authors, staff, and outside vendor to update content as needed and ensure timely release; continue to explore ways to publicize e-book to diverse audiences; serve as troubleshooting liaison for any issues with purchasers; primary contact with vendor regarding sales on ecommerce site; track sales and set up quarterly royalty payments for authors
- FSP—administer annual Journal Author Award competition—select and contact judges; monitor judging process; coordinate award distribution; work with Marketing and Communications to announce winners
- Sections Newsletters—provide editorial support as needed for various publications.
- InsuranceNewsNet (INN)—serve as liaison for quarterly article submission of FSP/NAIFA column to INN
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- Excellent writing, editing, and proofreading skills
- Strong leadership and management abilities
- Strong organizational and time management skills
- Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously
- Deep understanding of editorial standards and style guides
- Ability to think critically and make sound editorial decisions
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Manage print and digital publication lifecycle
EXPERIENCE & EDUCATION
- 5-10 years of editorial and managerial experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, Communications, English, Business, or related field
- Print and digital publication experience
- Financial services and association experience preferred
- Experience with InDesign page layout system preferred
