About Animal Welfare Investigations Project (AWIP)
Animal Welfare Investigations Project (AWIP) is an international, investigations-led animal protection organisation. We investigate and rescue animals from serious, complex, and organised animal cruelty.
This role will be employed by the U.S. subsidiary of Animal Welfare Investigations Project Limited, a UK-based not-for-profit organisation. The U.S. entity supports AWIP’s investigations and Marketing and Communications (MarrComm) functions, particularly for North American audiences.
Our work is real, urgent, and often unfolding in real time. The content we publish directly influences whether animals are protected and whether perpetrators are brought to justice.
The Role
We are seeking a Content Writer to support and scale our digital campaigning and supporter engagement across the United States. This is a hands-on writing role, focused on producing emotionally compelling, urgency-driven content at volume and at speed.
You will write petitions, supporter appeals, campaign emails, chasers, court updates, and social media copy based on live investigations and enforcement actions.
We regularly send 10+ emails per week, run multiple petitions and handraisers simultaneously, and respond rapidly to court developments and operational updates. This role exists to ensure content production keeps pace with the urgency of our work.
Key Responsibilities
Campaign & Supporter Content
- Write high-emotion petitions, supporter appeals, and calls to action
- Draft urgent campaign emails, breaking updates, and follow-up chasers
- Translate investigation and court updates into clear, compelling supporter messaging
- Write social media copy aligned with active campaigns and enforcement outcomes
Content Production & Volume
- Deliver consistent, publish-ready copy to tight deadlines
- Maintain AWIP’s distinctive voice: urgent, direct, justice-focused, and mission-led
- Support the organisation’s Content Lab, helping build a pipeline of planned and evergreen content
- Adapt copy for different supporter segments and levels of engagement
Urgent & Live-Response Writing (Critical Requirement)
- Respond rapidly to breaking developments such as: Court hearings, verdicts, and legal updates
- Live investigations and enforcement actions
- Rescue operations or urgent intelligence updates
- Produce publish-ready copy within 30–60 minutes when required
- Monitor internal channels during priority moments and act quickly on direction
- Work calmly and accurately under pressure without sacrificing emotional impact
This is not a slow-turnaround content role. While much work is planned in advance, speed is critical to impact during urgent moments.
Working Across Time Zones
This role will work across U.S. and UK time zones, supporting an international team and live investigations. Flexibility is required to accommodate cross-team collaboration.
While core working hours will generally align with U.S. time zones, early mornings or later finishes may occasionally be required during priority campaigns or live developments.
Required Qualifications
- Must be based in the United States and legally authorised to work in the U.S.
- Proven experience writing emotional, persuasive content (advocacy, fundraising, campaigning, or direct response)
- Strong ability to write with urgency, clarity, and conviction
- Comfortable working with sensitive and distressing subject matter related to animal cruelty
- Excellent written English and attention to detail
- Ability to edit and prepare images using Photoshop, Canva, or similar tools to support digital campaigns and social content
- Ability to manage multiple pieces of content and meet rapid deadlines in a remote environment
- Genuine dedication and commitment to the animal protection cause, and alignment with AWIP’s mission to investigate, disrupt, protect, and rescue
Preferred Experience & Alignment
- Experience in nonprofit campaigning, advocacy, or supporter communications
- Familiarity with petitions, donor or supporter appeals, or email campaigning
- Background in campaigning, journalism, or fast-paced advocacy or newsroom environments
- Understanding of U.S. nonprofit or activist audiences
- A vegan or vegetarian lifestyle is strongly aligned with our mission and culture and is therefore highly preferred.
Compensation & Working Arrangements
Pay: $19.50 – $24.50 per hour, depending on experience
Hours: Full-time, W-2 employment, 40 hours per week
Location: Fully remote (U.S.-based)
Flexibility required to respond to urgent developments, including occasional evenings or weekends.
