Part-Time / Contract Technical Writer and Editor
AirSpace Innovation (ASI) is a dynamic small business providing cutting-edge engineering, scientific, program management, and strategic planning services to the federal government, commercial, and academic sectors. Leveraging our expertise in aviation technology, air traffic management, research, systems engineering, and acquisition planning, we collaborate with diverse stakeholders to achieve our customers’ missions efficiently and cost-effectively.
We work at the intersection of aviation technology and air traffic management (ATM) modernization initiatives, with a growing focus on integrating new entrants such as space launch and reentry, higher airspace operations, UAS, and UAM into the National Airspace System (NAS).
Job Description:
ASI is seeking a skilled Technical Writer/Editor who can both (1) set the team up for success with strong templates and starter files and (2) elevate drafts into client-ready deliverables. You will create, edit, and maintain Word and PowerPoint deliverables that communicate complex information clearly to technical and non-technical audiences. You will collaborate closely with engineers, project managers, and other stakeholders to ensure every deliverable is accurate, consistent, and polished.
This is a part-time / contract role with an on-call, flexible schedule.
What You’ll Be Doing:
You will support the full deliverable lifecycle, from “blank page” to final submission, by creating standardized starting points and ensuring consistently high writing and formatting quality.
Document and slide production (templates + starter files):
- Create and maintain ASI Word and PowerPoint templates that reflect company styles and formatting standards (styles, headings, numbering, table/figure formats, captioning, layouts, cover pages, and reusable sections).
- Provide starter documents and slide decks for projects so authors begin with the correct structure and formatting from day one.
- Build reusable components (e.g., standard sections, callout boxes, boilerplate language, slide layouts) to reduce rework and improve consistency across teams.
- (Nice to have) Create lightweight automation or productivity aids (e.g., Word macros, Quick Parts/building blocks) that streamline tedious formatting tasks.
Editorial review and quality control (writing + consistency):
- Develop, write, and edit technical documents, including technical memoranda, reports, presentations, specifications, and procedures.
- Review and edit content developed by other team members for clarity, grammar, consistency, and professional tone, while preserving technical accuracy.
- Perform detailed quality checks that catch the “needle” issues, such as:
- Acronyms missing, defined multiple times, or defined inconsistently
- Inconsistent terminology, headings, numbering, cross-references, figure/table callouts, and captions
- Formatting drift across sections/authors (spacing, styles, indentation, pagination, layout)
- Maintain and update existing documentation to reflect changes in products, services, or regulations.
- Ensure all deliverables adhere to company style guidance and industry best practices.
- Create or refine visuals as needed (infographics, diagrams, and flowcharts) to improve understanding.
- Manage multiple documentation projects simultaneously and deliver on schedule.
Required Qualifications & Experience
- U.S. Citizenship with the ability to obtain and maintain an FAA Public Trust clearance.
- Bachelor’s degree in Technical Writing, English, Engineering, or a related field.
- 3+ years of experience in technical writing or editing, preferably within engineering or technology sectors.
- Mastery of Microsoft Word and PowerPoint, and Adobe Acrobat, including complex document formatting and production workflows. For example: Advanced Microsoft Word functions (styles, formatting control, and producing publication-quality documents). Word source/citation management and repeatable document systems (templates; style governance; cross-references; Table of Contents, Figures, and Tables).
- Strong editorial judgment and attention to detail; you consistently catch issues others miss
- Ability to understand and interpret engineering drawings, specifications, and technical reports.
- Experience creating visual aids such as diagrams and flowcharts.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
- Proficient with collaboration tools (Teams and SharePoint).
Bonus Points For Experience in
- Macros / automation, Quick Parts, reusable components, and template engineering that makes quality repeatable
- Familiarity with markup languages used in technical publishing workflows (e.g., Markdown, HTML, XML) and ability to translate content cleanly between Word/PowerPoint and structured formats
- Experience supporting FAA, transportation, aerospace, or government technical deliverables
- Visual communication skills (diagrams, flowcharts, clean slide design)
