Managing Editor, International Literacy Association
Are you passionate about literacy education and skilled in creating compelling, mission-driven content? The International Literacy Association (ILA) is looking for a Managing Editor to lead editorial production for Literacy Today (our digital member magazine) and Literacy Now (our blog). This position blends strategic content planning with hands-on execution, producing resources that connect literacy research and practice for educators worldwide.
We are looking for someone who is excited about exploring new ways to deliver literacy content and leverage digital media to expand our reach and engagement. As the Managing Editor, you will curate and produce content that supports and informs educators and literacy advocates across the globe. The ideal candidate will excel at managing editorial pipelines, editing and proofreading materials, and ensuring consistency across ILA’s written communications. This role requires creative vision, meticulous attention to detail, and a commitment to advancing ILA’s mission.
Key Responsibilities:
Editorial Oversight for Literacy Today:
- Manage the editorial production of Literacy Today, ILA’s quarterly member magazine, including content acquisition, editing, contributor management, and design coordination.
- Collaborate with guest editors to develop editorial lineups for each issue’s theme.
- Assign stories to subject matter experts and freelancers, ensuring alignment with ILA’s mission.
- Oversee photo research, selection, and layout in collaboration with designers.
- Integrate interactive features into the digital publishing platform.
Content Development:
- Manage the content pipeline for Literacy Now, soliciting and commissioning submissions to maintain a steady flow of high-quality blog content.
- Write, edit, copyedit, and proofread marketing materials, newsletters, research briefs, and other communications, ensuring accuracy and consistency with ILA’s style guide.
- Craft and send targeted emails to support Literacy Today and broader organizational initiatives.
- Collaborate with subject matter experts, freelancers, and vendors to ensure timely delivery of engaging content.
Other Responsibilities:
- Publish final magazine and blog content on digital platforms.
- Handle contracts, payments, and communications with external vendors.
- Contribute to cross-departmental initiatives as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, or a related field (or equivalent experience)
- 4–6 years of experience in content acquisition, editing, and publishing across various platforms
- Strong writing, editing, and proofreading skills with a diverse portfolio
- Proven project management skills with the ability to juggle multiple priorities and meet deadlines
- Experience working within educational content creation, literacy-focused organizations, or K–12 education is highly preferred
- Experience with content management systems (CMS), digital publishing platforms, and the ability to learn and adapt to new tools and systems are essential
