Legal Proofreader (contract) – Remote in NY, NJ, CT, or PA

A leading law firm is searching for a talented Legal Proofreader to join its team for a 6+ month contract role. The position can be done fully remotely, but all candidates must reside in NY, NJ, CT or PA for payroll purposes.

Position summary:

The Proofreader reviews, examines, validates and makes appropriate grammatical, mathematical, typographical or compositional corrections.

Essential functions:

  • Examines and corrects EDGAR documentation.
  • Proofreads documents for errors in typing, spelling and syntax to ensure proper placement of inserts, edits, tables and other documentation.
  • Serves as a resource to redline and blackline documentation.
  • Acts as a resource for all questions related to grammar and spelling.
  • Follows, tracks and responds to all proofreading requests and meets deadlines for completion.
  • Audits documentation for proper format, text accuracy and statistical data.

Education:

Bachelor’s degree or some college coursework required, preferably in English, Journalism, or other related field.

Qualifications:

  • 1 to 3 years of experience in editing and proofing documents required.
  • Expert level knowledge of English language, grammar, spelling and punctuation; and attention to detail.
  • Working knowledge of proofing marks and procedures.
  • Knowledge of current formats and citation protocols (The Chicago Manual of Style, The Bluebook and California Style Manual).
  • Familiar with legal proofreading styles (Cold Read, Full Read, Definitions and Defined Terms Check).
  • Familiarity with legal terminology, legal language and variety of citation and brief formats used in legal work.
  • Ability to work with all levels of legal staff.
  • Experience in handling sensitive, confidential information.
  • Excellent communicator (oral and written).
  • Strong organizational skills with a keen ability to prioritize and multi-task.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Word.

Job Types: Full-time, Contract

Pay: Up to $35.00 per hour

Expected hours: 40 per week

Schedule:

  • 8 hour shift
  • Overnight shift
  • Weekends as needed
