Position
The Brand Strategy and Digital Communications Department (BrandCom) is a strategic arm of the Smart Electric Power Alliance (SEPA) that drives the development and execution of SEPA’s brand identity and digital presence —including management of all external-facing communications channels such as the website, social media, email marketing, newsletters, and more. Through storytelling, audience engagement, and continuous optimization, the team ensures SEPA’s value is communicated clearly, consistently, and with impact.
SEPA is seeking a detail-oriented Copywriter Contractor with strong editing and proofreading skills to support the development and refinement of marketing content and long-form research reports. This individual will be responsible for ensuring consistency in style, formatting citations, and polishing content for a wide range of internal and external audiences.
This role will support the Brand Strategy and Digital Communications team, working closely with subject matter experts and project leads to deliver clear, accurate, and engaging materials. The ideal candidate is a meticulous copy editor with a strong command of grammar and style who also enjoys transforming complex topics into clear, accessible content for diverse audiences.
This position reports to the BrandCom Project Manager and works closely with the Director of Marketing and cross-functional teams to ensure coordinated messaging and integrated campaigns. Compensation for this role starts at $55/hour.
Responsibilities
- Proofread and edit copy for accuracy, clarity, grammar, and brand alignment across SEPA materials.
- Format citations, footnotes, and references in alignment with SEPA’s in-house style guide.
- Refine and polish copy developed by internal subject matter experts, ensuring tone and readability for target audiences.
- Assist in developing and editing marketing content for digital and print channels, including:
- Event promotions and webinar descriptions
- Email campaigns and newsletters
- Social media posts
- Landing pages
- Blog posts and executive summaries
- Support formatting and final copyediting of SEPA’s white papers, market intelligence reports, and research publications.
- Ensure that all materials developed by the BrandCom team are consistent, well-organized, and aligned with the messaging goals, collaborating with key stakeholders as needed.
- Maintain adherence to SEPA’s brand voice, tone, and editorial standards.
- Minimum of three years’ experience in copywriting, proofreading, or editorial roles; experience in energy, utilities, or clean tech industries a plus.
- Strong command of grammar, punctuation, and citation formatting.
- Experience editing long-form content such as reports, white papers, and research summaries.
- Excellent attention to detail and ability to catch inconsistencies, typos, and formatting issues.
- Strong portfolio demonstrating editing and writing capabilities across content types.
- Comfortable working in a collaborative environment and managing multiple deadlines.
- Bachelor’s degree in English, Communications, Journalism, Marketing, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
- Familiarity with AP Style and APA Style preferred.
