Communications Specialist – II/ Sr Writer/Editor – $25 – $40 an hour
Breck is seeking a driven candidate with experience in Writing and Strategic Communications and a Sr Writer/Editor. This is a potential contracting position with up to 40 hours per week. This position requires a candidate who is naturally curious and quick to absorb information across a multitude of topics, and who is motivated by continuous improvement and learning. The candidate should bring diverse viewpoints and ideas to projects and have an interest in applying learned knowledge or experience to form practical solutions. This position will be in service to a federal client of Breck’s. This position is only for candidates with an active DHS Public Trust or greater.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES
Comms II Position
- Write and edit strategic communications plan
- Develop messaging
- Write and edit content for communication products including newsletters, correspondence, presentations, fact sheets, reports, social media, plans, and engagement materials
- Write and edit website content
- Independently develops and/or manages the development of strategic communications and marketing plans.
- Leads the development of communications materials, marketing materials, and relevant artifacts in an effort to build brand awareness
- Leads communications planning efforts for activities as assigned.
- Conducts assessments of target audiences to determine communications needs and develops marketing campaigns to effectively reach target audiences
- Capable of strategic thinking and analysis of varied and complex matters
- Experienced and skilled in effective methods to reach targeted markets
- Conducts follow-up assessments of communications and/or marketing campaigns to ensure effectiveness of efforts
- Works under limited supervision.
- Pay Range: $25-$35 per hour
SR Writer/Editor Position
- Coordinates work and supervises other editor/writers as required when working on large projects
- Responsible for researching information needed to support projects, gathering resources, and developing content based upon accurate, factual information
- Works with graphic artists and project team members to develop designs and text layouts
- Oversees product quality
- Proofreading written materials for typographical, grammatical and format errors; ensuring products are of consistent quality
- Adding “track changes” and “version” history by providing easy access to the version history of the application’s items to identify who made edits and when they were made
- Conducting fact-checking and proof-reading, when requested
- Advising on strategies related to editorial style, publication workflow, and related issues.
- Researching and writing fact sheets, articles, and web content
- Developing and distributing newsletters for both internal and external audiences
- Incorporating a range of styles and “voices” suitable to various formats or media.
- Editing for consistency, united, and “one voice”
- Pay Range: $32-$40 per hour
REQUIRED
- 2+ years of professional experience in writing and strategic communications
- OR Minimum of 7 years of experience providing all writing, editing, proofreading, and creative conception for reports, press releases, fact sheets, web site text, public speaking, strategic plans, briefings, and other artifacts for Sr Writer/Editor
- Bachelor’s degree or greater in Communications or a related field
- Must currently hold DHS Public Trust or greater
- Outgoing personality with the ability to build quick, strong relationships
- Strong interpersonal communicator through in-person, verbal, and written communication
- Able to receive and follow through on feedback and direction
- Goal-driven, accountable, and able to work within deadlines
- Resourceful multi-tasker
- Conceptual thinker with strong analytic skills
- Strong work ethic
