Associate Editor, Serious Eats
Serious Eats is seeking a food-loving and detail-oriented associate editor to join our team, where rigorous research, culinary curiosity, and creativity come together to produce engaging, evidence-based food articles, recipes, and other content. The associate editor’s primary focus is writing, editing, and building articles for Serious Eats, as well as working with the editorial team on other editorial tasks and operations. The ideal candidate is highly self-motivated, deeply curious, scientifically literate, approaches research rigorously and with skepticism, and can continuously generate new, fun, and exciting ideas across a range of content types and editorial initiatives. The candidate should have a strong vein of nerdy culinary knowledge and curiosity.
The position reports to the Culinary Editor.
This position will either be based in our New York office or Remote
NY In-office Expectations: This position is hybrid in-office, with the ability to work remotely for up to 2 days per week.
Remote In-office Expectations: This position is fully remote with no in-office requirements, (might require coming into an office 1 or 2x a year)
About The Positions Contributions:
30% – Work closely with editorial and growth teams to brainstorm and continuously refine processes for publishing on-brand, accurate, quick-turnaround pieces tailored to succeed on Google Discover with the goal of driving immediate traffic. Meticulously compile and analyze data to improve titles, pitches, and strategies for new content.
20% – Pitch, report, write, and produce original content for the site, including short- and longform articles (e.g., ingredient guides and culinary explainers), recipe headnotes, trend-driven pieces, and other story formats.
15% – Work with editorial team on both day-to-day operations and larger initiatives, including digital issues and sponsored packages, with an eye to efficiency and quality.
15% – Oversee recipe roundup (aka gallery) strategy and production. Produce social video content in conjunction with social editor, as needed. Assist team with content library updates and production tasks on an ongoing basis. Assist with taste tests, including research, shopping, and running taste tests.
10% – Work with new and established freelance contributors in all stages from onboarding and assigning to editing and publication.
10% – Work closely with growth, newsletter, and social teams to develop and promote content. Meet production and traffic goals.
The Role’s Minimum Qualifications and Job Requirements:
Education:
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience
Experience:
- 3+ years of professional experience in editorial writing, with a strong focus on food journalism or culinary content.
- A passion for food and cooking, with an interest and drive to understand why and how things work on a technical level.
Specific Knowledge, Skills, Certifications and Abilities:
- Excellent research, writing, and editing (including copyediting) skills.
- Ability to craft content that aligns with Serious Eats as a brand and resonates with our audience.
- Commitment to thorough, rigorous fact-checking and evidence-based research on culinary, scientific, cultural, and historical topics.
- Self-driven; high degree of collaboration, organization, and positivity; ability to thrive in a fast-changing environment.
% Travel Required (Approximate): 5%

Pay Range
Salary: New York: $64,350.00 – $65,000.00
