Multimedia Journalist – $16 – $28 an hour

Chicago-based media group with several major-network affiliations is seeking versatile Multimedia Journalists to support the launch and ongoing growth of multiple streaming channels on iHeart Radio, along with related web and social channels (launching in late November). This role is designed for news- and sports-focused storytellers who can create compelling audio and multimedia content on tight timelines.

Successful candidates will consistently deliver accurate, engaging stories that meet daily story volume and reach minimums. Contract positions are available across news, business, and sports, with compensation of $16–$28 per hour based on performance against those daily requirements.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Produce audio-first voice stories with clear structure, strong pacing, and confident delivery.
  • Write accurate, compelling scripts tailored for radio, web, and social distribution.
  • Gather and verify information using reliable sources, including timely updates for breaking news and sports coverage.
  • Create and package multimedia content for web and social channels, adapting tone and format for each platform.
  • Manage daily production workflows to consistently meet story volume and reach minimums.
  • Collaborate with editorial teams to pitch, refine, and finalize story angles aligned to channel needs.
  • Maintain high standards for grammar, factual accuracy, and audience relevance.
  • Use audio production tools to edit, mix, and prepare final segments for publication.
  • Support assigned on-air elements when scheduled, including reading scripts and delivering updates.
  • Demonstrate strong social media skills by promoting and engaging with content in a timely manner.
  • Track performance expectations and adjust storytelling strategy to improve reach and outcomes.

Requirements

  • Audio production experience is required.
  • Video production experience is a bonus.
  • Strong writing ability with demonstrated skill in scripting for audio and digital audiences.
  • Ability to deliver voice stories confidently and articulately.
  • Strong social media skills, including content awareness and timely posting.
  • Ability to meet deadlines while managing multiple assignments.
  • Experience covering news and/or sports (including the ability to learn and execute coverage quickly).
  • Working knowledge of common publishing and editing workflows for multimedia content.
  • Ability to work effectively from home with reliable internet and a professional setup.
  • Must provide your own computer, editing software, microphone, and related equipment.
  • Some travel may be required.
