Job Summary:

We have an immediate opening for a well-organized Editor with a proven track record of managing multiple content projects and deadlines.

Position Summary:

StratComm is seeking an experienced Editor to support a newly awarded contract with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). This position will oversee the creation, review, and refinement of written content to ensure clarity, accuracy, and alignment with the company’s voice and standards.

The Editor will provide editorial support on a contract basis, reviewing and refining written content to ensure accuracy, clarity, consistency, and adherence to established company standards. This role will work closely with internal teams to edit, proofread, and format a variety of documents and materials while maintaining attention to detail and meeting established deadlines. The ideal candidate will have strong written communication skills, excellent grammar and proofreading abilities, and the flexibility to work independently in a fast-paced environment.

This is a remote, part-time, independent contractor position with work performed on an as-needed basis throughout the project.

Essential Responsibilities

Editorial and Quality Control

  • Lead the development, review, and refinement of written content to ensure clarity, accuracy, consistency, and alignment with company and client standards.
  • Perform advanced editorial support, including proofreading, copyediting, substantive editing, and quality assurance reviews.
  • Verify the accuracy of dates, names, statistics, references, and other factual information.
  • Evaluate content structure, flow, and readability, recommending improvements as appropriate.
  • Establish, maintain, and enforce editorial standards, style guides, plain language principles, and accessibility requirements across projects.
  • Ensure deliverables meet contractual requirements, agency guidelines, and company quality standards.
  • Provide constructive feedback and editorial recommendations to writers, Editors, and other team members.
  • Ensure deliverables meet client expectations and support client satisfaction.

Contract and Compliance Awareness

  • Understand statements of work, contract deliverables, and government-specific editorial requirements.
  • Ensure work adheres to deadlines, quality standards, and contractual obligations.
  • Support contract close-out by reviewing deliverables and providing feedback to project managers.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in English, Communications, Journalism, or a related field (or equivalent professional experience).
  • 3-5+ years of professional editing experience, including work supporting government or highly regulated clients.
  • Demonstrated ability to meet strict deadlines while managing multiple deliverables across concurrent contracts.
  • Strong knowledge of editorial standards, style guides (e.g., AP, Chicago, government-specific guides), and plain language principles.
  • Proven experience providing varying levels of editorial support, including proofreading, copyediting, substantive editing, and quality control (QC).
  • Ability to interpret and adhere to contract requirements, statements of work, and agency-specific guidelines.
  • Strong attention to detail with the ability to maintain quality under tight timelines and high-volume workloads.
  • Proficiency with common editing and collaboration tools (e.g., Microsoft Word with Track Changes, SharePoint, Adobe Acrobat, and collaboration platforms).
  • Strong communication skills, including the ability to provide clear, constructive feedback to writers and stakeholders.
  • Familiarity with document accessibility requirements, formatting standards, and Section 508 compliance preferred.
  • Ability to exercise sound editorial judgment while balancing client preferences, contract constraints, and best practices.
  • Ability to pass a federal background check.
