Lead News Writer – From $25 an hour

No Filter News is an independent news organization focused on providing clear, factual, and accessible reporting without partisan framing or unnecessary editorialization.

We are building our newsroom from the ground up, and we’re looking for a Lead News Writer to become the second member of our team. In this role, you’ll work directly with the founder to help establish the editorial standards, sourcing practices, and day-to-day workflow that will shape No Filter News as it grows.

The Role

The Lead News Writer will be responsible for identifying newsworthy stories, researching and verifying information, and producing clear, accurate news articles for publication.

This is a hands-on role with significant responsibility. Because our newsroom is currently very small, you’ll have an opportunity to help develop our editorial process rather than simply following an established newsroom structure.

A central part of the position is learning and applying unbiased story selection and sourcing practices. We are not looking for someone who simply avoids obvious partisan language; we want someone who can distinguish reporting from commentary, recognize potential bias in sources and framing, and consistently present relevant facts and perspectives fairly.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor current events and identify stories appropriate for No Filter News.
  • Research developing and ongoing stories using reliable primary and secondary sources.
  • Verify facts, dates, names, quotations, statistics, and other important information before publication.
  • Write concise, understandable news articles for a general audience.
  • Identify and use authoritative primary sources appropriately.
  • Cross-check significant claims against independent sources.
  • Clearly distinguish confirmed facts from allegations, interpretations, predictions, and opinions.
  • Avoid loaded language, unnecessary editorializing, and unsupported assumptions about people’s motives.
  • Consider whether the selection and framing of a story fairly represents the underlying news.
  • Monitor stories after publication and make corrections when warranted.
  • Work with the founder to develop and maintain editorial standards and sourcing guidelines.
  • Help establish repeatable newsroom workflows as No Filter News grows.
  • Take responsibility for meeting agreed-upon publishing schedules and deadlines.
  • Assist in marketing the organization to the public.

What We’re Looking For

  • Strong written communication skills.
  • Excellent attention to detail.
  • Ability to research information independently.
  • Ability to evaluate the credibility and reliability of sources.
  • Willingness to question initial assumptions and verify information before publication.
  • Ability to write objectively and distinguish factual reporting from opinion.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills.
  • Willingness to learn and follow No Filter News’s editorial and sourcing standards.

Journalism Experience

Formal journalism experience is preferred but not required.

Candidates with backgrounds in journalism, communications, research, writing, fact-checking, or related fields are encouraged to apply. We are also interested in candidates who can demonstrate strong research and writing abilities through academic work, independent projects, previous publications, or other relevant experience.

Training will be provided on No Filter News’s specific standards for unbiased story selection, source evaluation, verification, and editorial framing.

Our Editorial Approach

No Filter News seeks to separate reporting from opinion.

That means our writers should be comfortable reporting facts even when those facts may be inconvenient to a particular political party, ideology, organization, or audience.

We expect writers to:

  • Report what can be established from the available evidence.
  • Attribute claims to the people or organizations making them.
  • Seek relevant perspectives when a story involves meaningful disagreement.
  • Avoid presenting speculation as fact.
  • Use primary documentation whenever practical.
  • Correct errors rather than defend them.
  • Apply the same sourcing and verification standards regardless of who or what a story concerns.

The goal isn’t to pretend that every source or claim is equally reliable. The goal is to apply consistent, evidence-based editorial standards.

What You’ll Get

  • Starting compensation of $20/hour.
  • Direct collaboration with the founder.
  • An opportunity to help establish the editorial standards and workflow of a new independent news organization.
  • Training in No Filter News’s approach to source evaluation, fact-checking, story selection, and unbiased reporting.
  • Significant responsibility and the opportunity to grow with the organization.
  • Benefits: to be discussed.

Candidates are welcome to share previous projects during the interview process.
