Freelance Writer at JTM Newspapers – $100.00/hour
The Alpine Avalanche is seeking a reliable Freelance Reporter/Writer to contribute 3–4 stories per week covering local news in West Texas.
Assignments will include Commissioners Court and local government coverage, high school sports, community news, and feature stories.
This is a remote position, but the writer must be dependable, able to meet time-sensitive weekly deadlines, and comfortable covering meetings and events remotely when possible.
What we’re looking for:
- Strong, clean news writing and reporting skills
- Ability to turn stories around quickly
- Experience covering local government and/or sports preferred
- Dependable communication and availability
- Familiarity with West Texas is a plus
- Journalism experience preferred, but strong writers with relevant experience are encouraged to apply

Experience
- Proven experience in digital journalism, content writing, or broadcast journalism with a strong portfolio of published work
- Strong written communication skills with an emphasis on storytelling and copywriting that engages readers across various formats
- Experience in research, fact-checking, and adhering to journalistic ethics in fast-paced environments
- Knowledge of AP style guidelines and experience in television broadcast editing or news broadcast videography is highly desirable
- Ability to work independently while managing multiple projects under tight deadlines
