Calling all reporters and writers! We’re accepting pitches for two issues coming out early next year: “Bodies” and “Ghosts.” These themes will be interpreted broadly — so, try us. We accept reporting, essays, fiction, and poetry. Learn more:
PITCHING THE DIAL
The Dial is a new online magazine of culture, politics, and ideas with a focus on locally sourced writing from around the world. We welcome pitches for original reporting, pieces of criticism, and works of literature or translation. Most of our features will run about 2,000-3,000 words.
We are focused on stories from outside the United States.
Each of our issues will revolve around a central theme, interpreted broadly. In the coming months, these will include:
- Bodies
- Ghosts
These themes are starting off points rather than rigid categories. We also publish pieces that don’t fit these themes — so, try us.

We are a small nonprofit operation, but make an effort to pay competitive freelance rates.
REPORTING AND CRITICISM
To pitch us a work of reporting or criticism tied to one of our themes, please send us a pitch of a few paragraphs (around 250 words).
Persuade us that your story or analysis illuminates something new and specific and significant, and that you’ve done some of the relevant early legwork. We are seeking stories or critiques with a clear angle—not topics. We want to see how you think, and how you write. If you have a portfolio site, send us a link, and point us toward related past work.
Some subjects that particularly interest us are: justice, memory and international law, critiques of the “international order,” party reports from events that aren’t parties, and literary politics. In addition, we publish shorter dispatches. These might take the form of the diary of an object; reports from local literary scenes; and other modes that suggest a bit of whimsy. Pitches for these should be short and sweet.
We also accept photo stories.
We are not looking for travelogs or op-eds, straightforward book or movie reviews, reconsiderations of dead writers, or short uplifting stories about the power of optimism. Nor are we interested in projects that involve a writer parachuting into a place with which they’re unfamiliar.
We edit and fact-check everything we publish.
Our general rate is $800-1000 for 2000-2500 words.
